About us
South of San Antonio, just a half hour from the Alamo, Picosa Ranch rests where Hill Country meets Brush Country, on rolling grassland studded with big oaks and stands of mesquite. The ranch is home to dove, whitetail deer, upland birds, beef cattle, longhorns, horses, and a menagerie of exotics, including elk, zebra, axis, oryx, and black buck. You’ll find the genial atmosphere of a family ranch at Picosa, because that’s what it is: home to a family of ardent hunters who have created a quality hunting experience for a fortunate few.
History
Picosa Ranch was the homestead of statesman John Connally, who served as Secretary of the Navy, Governor of Texas, and Secretary of the Treasury in the 1960s and ‘70s. During that era “Big John” Connally hosted a glittering coterie of world leaders, movie stars, and dignitaries at the ranch.
In 1995, Greg Kowalski, President and CEO of The RK Group, bought Picosa Ranch. It’s been home to Greg and his family ever since. Like the Connallys, the Kowalskis maintain the ranch as a working operation, raising cattle, horses, and exotic game. Upland hunting, Dove hunting and Whitetail hunting is a family passion and a vital part of Picosa Ranch life.
Lodge
Hearty, elegant meals are prepared on-site under the auspices of the Kowalski family’s catering company, The RK Group, which has pampered Texans with gourmet food and faultless service for over 60 years. Spacious, handsomely-appointed South Range Lodge is headquarters for our hunters. Picosa Ranch Lodge offers accommodations for up to 40 guests in our new 3,000 square foot sleeping quarters that were added to the South Range Lodge. Each bedroom will has their own bathroom, wireless internet, flat screen TV with satellite and vaulted ceilings.
Casual luxury at the Lodge
You’d never believe it was once a barn on Gov. Connally’s cattle ranch. Now it’s been renovated to provide hunters with every comfort: a rustic stone fireplace flanked by sofas, a broad porch with a fleet of big, comfortable rocking chairs, an expansive patio surrounding a stone firepit, gas barbecue pit, fully staffed kitchen, and well-stocked bar.
Non-hunters who wish to relax at the Lodge will have plenty to do: there's a quality sound system, flat-screen TV, a shuffleboard table, horseshoes, and plenty of seating for snacking, card-playing, and conversation. Ladies’ and gentlemen’s restrooms are housed in an elegantly appointed grain silo adjacent to the Lodge. One of the highlights of your Picosa Ranch hunt will be the casual comfort of South Range Lodge and the attentiveness of the staff.
Texas Dove Hunting
Picosa Ranch is a dove hunter’s dream. Located just 30 miles southeast of San Antonio this pristine property has grain fields of milo, millet and sunflower that hold whitewing and mourning dove throughout the ranch. If hunting around water ponds is your style, then you will enjoy the fast action of dove hunting at its finest around 8 stocked ponds.
The ranch has a private airstrip that is 4,292 foot long by 60 feet wide for guests flying private.
Dove Hunting Package Includes:
- 3 days of Dove Hunting
- Guide service, skeet shooting, fishing, lodging, meals, beverages, in-field transportation, bird cleaning and vacuumed packaging.
- Dates: September-October and December-January
- Rates: 3 Full Hunts (3 days/2 nights)- $895 per hunter
- Non- Hunters: $200 per day
- 5 hunters minimum
Texas Upland Hunting
Picosa Ranch hunts are classic walk-up, mixed-bag upland hunts. Your hunt will begin with meeting your guide and a chance to warm up with some clay target shooting, if you like. Then your party is on its way to your assigned field. Bird dogs range the fields, pointing and flushing plentiful coveys of quail, chukar, and pheasant. Well-stocked, shaded picnic areas offer periodic refreshments during the hunt. After the hunt, while you wind down and swap stories, your birds will be breasted, vacuum packed, and iced down in a take-away Picosa Ranch insulated game bag. The ranch provides blaze orange hunting vests and snake gaiters for use during the hunt.
